One reason I wanted to start a personal website was that I missed the sense of curating a personal profile rather than weeding through a news feed. One fun feature of those profiles was always the litany of quotes that explained the person’s worldview. Here are some of mine:

“Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” -Karl Barth

“If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed – but hate these things in yourself, not in another.” -Thomas Merton

“Where there is speech, there is a beast.” -Buddhist proverb (or so said the Art Institute)

“Sometimes being seen is the same thing as being saved.” -Mary Rakow, The Memory Room

“Out of the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing was ever made.” -Kant

“I’m just going to go home, lie down, and listen to country music … the music of pain.” -Xander

“It has just that queer twist about it that real things have.” -C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses – behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.” -Muhammad Ali

“If my thought-dreams could be seen/They’d prob’ly put my head in a guillotine.” -Dylan

“My name it means nothing, my age it means less/The country I come from is called the Midwest.” -Dylan

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” -Hamlet (I, v, 166-167)

“For Mercy has a human heart
Pity, a human face:
And Love, the human form divine,
And Peace, the human dress.”

“In a real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning, day after day.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

“I don’t know if I believe in them, but other people do and my life is richer for it.” -an Icelander on elves, from The Geography of Bliss

“I’m on Aslan’s side even if there isn’t any Aslan to lead it. I’m going to live as like a Narnian as I can even if there isn’t any Narnia.” -Puddleglum, The Silver Chair

“Ray, when someone asks if you’re a god, you say YES.” -Winston Zedmore, Ghostbusters
